 Dickinson Rams

HIGH SCHOOL

I went to John Dickinson High School. Home of the Rams. And the Blue and Gold. I graduated in the class of '72. While in High School I began to learn who I was.. and ended up spending my time with the "hippie" crowd. I went to protest marches in Washington (the Vietnam war was on... and it looked like we were all going to end up there since the college deferment was cancelled). I also helped run a coffee house in a local church. It was a great time. I loved it.

There was an art teacher there by the name of Ray Lewis.... He ran the yearbook, and got me interested in various artistic pursuits. Photography, Ceramics, Block printing... over the years since I've fiddled with these and other things again. He got me interested in doing art... and if I won the lottery tomorrow, I think I'd be doing art for the rest of my life. Mr. Lewis, this is my little memorial to you!!

After High School I attended the University Of Delaware. The mascot there is the Blue Hen Chicken... yeah yeah.. I know. Doesn't sound like much of a mascot, but there is a story behind it that I'm sure you can find on the web.. maybe HERE.

My first year there I commuted from home. Then moved into a co-ed dorm with a friend by the name of Ross Hall. I was undeclared for a long time, but then finally declared Philosophy. I loved it. My biggest interest was exploring the variety of religious practices and experiences. Eastern religions, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism were my biggest interests. I also liked what Taoism had to say. Finally I just got interested in Mysticism in general. The more I read the more I began to realize that the experiences of mystics - regardless of religious background - were essentially the same. I won't go into it here, but if you want to read about my religious views.. go rummage in my brain elsewhere. I graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy

Once I graduated from the U of D, and realized that there were no jobs for Philosophy majors.. I crashed around for several years, and then began to think about earning a living for the rest of my life. The only thing I found that I had liked was fiddling with computers (a pretty primitive business in those days - You could take your work home punched out on paper tape or punch cards). So I thought.. why not?

I'll tell you why not... I had no talent at math and so had managed to avoid it almost completely the first time thru college (heck I avoided it pretty well in High School too) So I had this little problem.. I needed to gain some skill in Math. I started with accounting classes.. Those were interesting. I went on to statistics classes.. not bad. Finally I bit the bullet and took the semester course that was all the math you were supposed to have learned in High School. I loved it. Got to know the professor (who happened to be Dean of the Mathematics Department). Then I moved on to Calculus - Missed acing the first semester by 1 question on an exam.

That's when I was accepted into the Computer Science masters program (and so did not have to complete the 3 semester Calculus requirement.. a break). I received a Teaching Assistant position which meant my tuition was paid, and I got an office in the CS building (Smith Hall for the curious.)

And so, I received a Masters in Computer Science.
